Economic impact of tariffs on imports in Mexico. An applied general equilibrium approach

Abstract

In this study, we analyse the effect on the Mexican economy of the establishment of an import tariff of 30 percent by the Mexican government, in a protectionist scenario. To complete the analysis, the effect of transferring the tax revenues collected from the tariff to Mexican households is studied. For this analysis, a computable general equilibrium model is used, calibrated from a 2012 social accounting matrix (SAM) constructed from the input-output table of that same year. The results point to a loss of income by the rest of the world and a decrease in demand for imports among households, protecting the demand for national inputs by 10 percent against demand for imported inputs. This work can also be used to assess the cost of protecting strategic sectors that need to be promoted to develop the country’s productive apparatus.
